Simmons Catalyst: Using the Crosstab

Use the Crosstab

The Crosstab is Simmon's preferred method to make comparisons between brands or different demographics.

Log in. In the top menu, go to Analyze > Crosstab.

Select questions and answers in Composer

The Composer consists of four sections:

  1. This section shows the questions asked on the Simmons survey, arranged into categories and subcategories. Open folders until you find a bolded word or phrase that is not a folder -- that indicates, Simmons asked a question about this topic. Click to select that question.
Example: see the bolded words for Automotive Miscellaneous > Car Rental > Personal Use > Brand -- that means Simmons asked a question about which brand of rental car someone used.
This section also has a search box option at the top, which you can use to identify if Simmons has any questions relevant to your topic.
  2. This section shows the possible answers to that question:
2a. Select the individual answer choices you want, and choose ADD at the bottom of this panel.
Example: we selected the answer choices Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz for rental car brands.
2b. Select the Add button. By default it adds each of the choices individually, but you can combine them by using AND or OR. OR will usually return more survey results than AND.
  3. This section lists what answers you selected. Select Add to Columns or Rows. Bases are rarely used.
  4. This section shows the Column and Row spaces where your answers appear.

Repeat the above process so that you have entered some criteria in both the Columns and the Rows.

Together, Columns and Rows create a table to compare multiple brands. You can enter a brand (for example, Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz car rentals) in the Column, and enter demographic or personal characteristics (for example, age, gender, education, media habits, etc.) in the Row -- or vice versa. See example below.

Run Report

If you enter a choice by mistake, check the box next to that item and use the Delete (trash can) icon.

When you have your preferred answer choices, select Run Report.
