Engaged Learning: Start


This guide is intended to provide some practical advice for students preparing their Engaged Learning Proposals through:

  • Providing context for the place of undergraduate research.
  • Depicting the research cycle and the role independent scholars play as part of the larger scholarly community.
  • Explaining the importance of tracking citations and providing tools to do so.
  • Showing how bibliographic management software can make citating sources easier.
  • Recommending the creation of a research schedule.
  • Exhibiting the different aspects of the research process: cognitive, emotional, and physical.
  • Offering advice on proposal writing and suggesting resources for further exploration.
  • Urging students to consult a liaison librarian to assist them with research.

* What do you want to accomplish?
* What purpose does it serve?
* In your proposal, show how you plan to get there.

Research Cycle

For ELPs, there are 2 separate research cycles:

  1. Research as part of the the approval phase, when you write your proposal.
  2. Research as part of the the post-activity phase, as you analyze research findings.
