An encyclopedia or dictionary is intended to offer up a basic summary of any topic. As such, encyclopedias and dictionaries are often excellent resources for beginning a research project.
In addition to giving you a basic understanding of the scope of a topic and who is out there that is writing about the topic, bibliographies (citations of other resources you might want to look at) are usually provided for further research.
