In order to understand a specific organization, start by understanding the trends and/or challenges facing the entire industry. This is especially critical if your organization is very small.
Think of related industries too. If your organization is the Dallas Black Dance Theater, the relevant industries could be modern or traditional dance ensembles, dance academies, or performance/event venues.
Research both larger and smaller nonprofit organizations in local newspapers. Check for event or staffing announcements, capital or building plans, event or exhibit reviews, and more. Search for both the name of the organization or names of founders or significant leaders.
