Definitions

Consultations

  • One-on-one or small group appointments that occur outside of the classroom or reference desk that require staff preparation or knowledge.
  • Includes interactions referred from chat. Includes in-depth research interactions through email.
  • Log through the Consultation form in LibAnswers or by confirming attendance in LibCal if you use the standard request form.

Reference transactions

  • Unscheduled transactions that involve the knowledge, use, recommendations, interpretation, or instruction of information sources, including Library Search and research guides. Can be any modality, on or off a reference shift.
  • Includes referral services. Includes reference questions through email that are not in-depth. Includes questions answered at tabling events or RWL.
  • Log through LibAnswers as reference.

Informational transactions

  • Transactions that do NOT involve the knowledge, use, recommendation, interpretation, or instruction in the use of any information sources. Transactions that assist with policies, locations, schedules, account administration, description of services, etc.
  • Log through LibAnswers as informational. Informational transactions through your SMU email are optional.

Semester Start Reminders

  • Set up your availability in LibCal Appointments. See instructions

  • Contact your department admins to find out if there are any new faculty. Check the people records in LibConnect to make sure they are assigned the right department (and if not, email LibApps@smu.edu). Send a welcome email to new faculty.

  • Set up your peer coaching. Find guiding documents in the Peer Coaching folder

  • Choose 1-2 things that feel achievable for you for the semester from the EDIA Pedagogical Recommendations

  • Add your current semester workshop events to the correct file in this Workshops folder.
