Keywords in Library Search

LGBTQ resources can be found in multiple disciplines, including collections on literature, communications and mass media, American history, religion, education and social services.

  • Search for a specific topic within LGBT studies to start. For example, "transgender youth", "same sex marriage", or "Stonewall uprising".
  • Terms have changed over time, and different disciplines use different terms. Searching under "homosexuality" may produce results that are historical or clinical. Searching under "queer" may produce largely cultural or literature studies.
  • Other keywords that could be used are "gay",  "GLBT", "LGBT", "transgender" and "transgendered", "sexual orientation", and "gender identity".
