Research Data Management: Plan

What is a data management plan (DMP)?

A data management plan documents:

  • Types of data to be collected,
  • How the data will be organized and documented,
  • How privacy, security, confidentiality, intellectual property or other rights will be addressed,
  • How, where, and when data might be accessed and shared, and
  • How data will be archived and preserved.

These plans are now required by many funding agencies at the time the grant proposal is submitted. Funding agencies have differing requirements for DMPs, so be sure to check for additional requirements beyond the standard ones.
