ATLA Religion Database: Understanding Results

Publication Types

Noting the type of publication will help you locate the source and anticipate the kind of information you can expect (e.g. an essay will be found in a book, so you will likely need the book’s title and call number. A  book review can be an excellent source, especially if you plan to use the book).

ATLA indexes many different kinds of resources, including:

  Periodicals

Journal Articles

  Books and Essays from Books

  Book Reviews

Read Abstracts

An article’s abstract is like a preview or a thumbnail: it gives an overview that can help you determine whether it is relevant to your topic, without reading the entire piece.

Finding Full Text

ATLA often provides a Full Text link directly in the results. If not, clicking the blue box will let you see if the article is available through another database or in print. If SMU does not have it, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan.
