ASAG 1300: Observations: Object Research

Search Tips

Use these tips in a basic library search or advanced search.

I used AND between my search terms to clarify I want search results that include all of these terms - not just results that talk about leisure and women, but French women engaged in leisure activities in the nineteenth century.

The quotes are a way to reduce the number of search results. They indicate I want my search results to address the art market as a phrase, not have results that contain art, but not market or vice versa. Same with nineteenth century.  If I didn't include the quotes I would get 103, 953 results rather than 3,254 results with the quotes.

I used OR in my search string since quipu is spelled khipu in some literature so I want results to include both terms. This will increase my search results, but ensure I'm not missing relevant resources.

I used * (asterisk) to clarify that I want search results that include variations on administration, i.e. administrative, administrate, etc.

Recommended Resources

Object research

Search for encyclopedias, handbooks, general overviews, and exhibition catalogs on the culture or time period attributed to the object and the object type.

If you know the creator/artist, search for catalogue raisonnes, artist monographs, exhibition catalogs, articles and other resources related to them. You will also want to conduct searches for related topics and subject matter around your object.
