ARHS 4399 Research and Methods in Art History: Unknown Artist/Creator

Researching works with no known artist/creator

  • No one search will give you all the resources you need for your paper. It's helpful to look at similar object types to gather comprehensive information about how the object was used within the culture and note if there are any unique features on your object.
  • Note that some objects depicting known people or deities may be reattributed later. For example - the DMA work, Censer representing a Rain Deity (object # 1967.5) used to be known as Head of the Rain God, Tlaloc but is no longer associated with Tlaloc. Object may also be reattributed to a different culture as more research is uncovered.

Below is an example of a simple search I might conduct to help me contextualize a quipu from Peru.

I used OR in my search string since quipu is spelled khipu in some literature so I want results to include both terms. This will increase my search results, but ensure I'm not missing relevant resources.

I may want to expand my search terms to clarify that I want to find information on how quipus/khipus were used in Peru administrative activities.

I used * (asterisk) to clarify that I want search results that include variations on administration, i.e. administrative, administrate, etc.
