Hello, I am Jonathan McMichael. I built this guide to help you through your research paper on the American West. This guide will include a few places that I think will be successful places to start your research. It is by no means comprehensive. You all have unique topics and it would be difficult (most likely impossible) to predict all of resources that could potentially work for each and every one of them.
If you need background or biographical information, I suggest using the Encyclopedia of the American West. It is a great resource for context and can be useful for fleshing out topic ideas.
If you find that while using this guide you are still getting stuck. Please schedule a consultation with me (over on the right). We can discuss your particular research problems and work to find the best resources for you.
I divided the guide into Primary and Secondary sources. I have included brief descriptions of what you might expect to find in each resource. Some will require you to log in with your SMU ID and some are just sources available online for free.
Feel free to explore.
