Welcome to Foreign Languages and Literatures

The homepage of the World Languages and Literatures Department at SMU offers information about faculty, classes, and requirements for majors and minors.

Materials in print at the library

In advanced literature classes, you may be expected to expand your analysis of your texts to include additional commentary -- secondary sources -- about  the reception of the work and/or the history and culture in which they were produced.

Sometimes you can do this with digital scholarly tools such as the MLA bibliography, but in some cases it is much more effective to use an older print tool. Please ask a librarian about this.

What is in this guide

Welcome to the Research Guide for Foreign Languages and Literatures at SMU.  The guide is meant to introduce students to tools and resources for foreign language students in Fondren library, electronic resources, and on the open web.

The guide starts with general sections on searching for books and citing sources

The guide contains special tabs devoted to specific languages taught at SMU.  Each of these contains electronic resources, dictionaries/grammar tools, and specialized access to literary texts.

The guide also provides clues for faculty and specialized researchers.
