Where do I find it?

Variations can be downloaded to your own Windows or Mac computer or used at public computers in:

  • Hamon Arts Library (Variations client or streaming audio)
  • All other library/campus locations (streaming audio only)

Welcome

Variations is a comprehensive music listening and viewing platform for your PC or Mac. With Variations, students can listen to recordings, view online scores, and a lot more. Variations offers the ability to annotate scores with drawings and text and then print them, create playlists of audio recordings, bookmark score pages and places in tracks, and create “drop the needle” tests on the fly. It also offers a robust timelining tool for showing analysis and annotation for different parts of a piece of music; you can watch analysis and/or texts go by as you listen!

Variations was developed at Indiana University and recently released as open source software; SMU has begun using Variations as a result of a collaboration between the Hamon Arts Library, Meadows School of the Arts, and the Office of Information Technology. For more information, contact the project manager, Pam Pagels.

To use the fullest features of Variations, you can download the Variations client to your computer. However, you can listen to an online stream of a recording via your web browser.

Disclaimer

Due to copyright restrictions, not all online recordings are available to all users in all locations.

All recordings may be accessed when using a computer on campus. When off-campus, some recordings may accessed when logged into SMU networks via proxy from off-campus, and others are restricted to students in courses requiring the recordings for course reserve purposes only.

Please be aware that this has only recently come out of a pilot project and we have definitely not worked out all the kinks in our system. Even this guide is definitely not completed and needs a lot of editing and content that’s not here yet. Anything you can do to help us out (let us know if you have a problem! Or, perhaps most importantly, bear with us as we learn how this works, too!) will be greatly appreciated.
