This guide is meant to expand on the ideas discussed in the library instruction session with Professor Sabri Ates and to make sure you can easily get back to some of the resources that were discussed.   This is meant as an outline of what the library can offer -- but only a beginning. 

Please ask a librarian for help if you cannot find what you need, or want to get more ideas about sources.

From Prof. Ates:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
•Identify and analyze problems, events, documents or artifacts of the past.
• Identify the main milestones and issues of the Islamic history.
•Analyze problems and events including: how to explain the rise of Islam in Ara-
bian peninsula; how to approach the times of the prophet Muhammad; teachings
and basic beliefs of Islam; religious practices and theology; Qur’an, Hadith, law
and jurisprudence; and how to understand the formation of the two main
branches of Islam (Sunni-Shi‘i) and their orthodoxies; and the nature of relations
with non-Muslims and the legal status of non-Muslim subjects of the Islamic Em-
pires.

This guide is meant to help you to reach these goals by finding information that is appropriate for your papers.

Please keep in mind that many of the resources on Islamic empires and civilizations are located at Bridwell Library, on the south part of campus.
